"Rabbi Shuchat tells of the emergence of Shaar Hashomayim as a congregation separate from the older Spanish and Portuguese Synagogue, the generation-long tension between the two congregations, and the rebellion that produced the Temple Emanu-El. He describes how the struggle for Jewish educational rights ultimately produced a real public school system in Quebec as well as other unsung achievements of Montreal Jewry - the Board of Jewish Ministers, the de Sola Club, the Religious Welfare Committee of the Canadian Jewish Congress, the Pavilion at Expo '67, and the Jewish Introduction Service."--BOOK JACKET.
