Using historical works from Canadian museums and archives, and the works of contemporary Canadian artists, Andrew Hunter delves into the deeper, poetic meanings of such events as the 1851 Yankee Gale on P.E.I., the sinking of the paddle wheeler SS Victoria on the Thames River in London, Ontario, in 1883, and the wreck of the SS Edmund Fitzgerald in 1975. The exhibition includes historical works by Robert Harris, George Thresher and Henry Nesbit McEvoy, among others, and contemporary works by Edward Burtynsky, Gu Xiong, Gerald Ferguson, and Patterson Ewen. Hunter also explores the symbolism of the doomed ship and the lost soul through Victorian narratives such as Moby Dick and The Rock of Ages, and the documentation of maritime graves.
